First planning meeting of the 42th Maamturks Challenge – 2017December 7, 2016
A typical early start on the morning of April 16th led us to another fantastic Maamturks Challenge. The early rise was made all the more easier by the clear skies and mild temperature. As the morning started, participants were greeted with some light fog on the trek from Corcóg to Mám Éan. As the day progressed on this burned up, but not before our checkpoint on Binn Idir an Dá Lóg was provided with some light snow showers. The remainder of the day progressed very smoothly, fantastic weather kept spirits highs for both the volunteers and participants. A total of 174 out of 198 participants completed the walk by the end of the evening. Thankful our volunteers were treated to a smooth event, with no major accident or injury.
This year our organising committee made a special effort to collect photos from both the participants and the volunteers on the checkpoints, these photos can be viewed in the club flickr account here.
Notable press releases this year included a two page spread in the summer addition of the Irish Mountaineering Log and the annual event report on Mountain views.ie
As always a massive thank you to our volunteers team who numbered over 40 students and alumni. As well as to the support of the local community, Galway Radio Experimenter club and Galway Mountain Rescue.
